Is the GoHighLevel AI Employee Worth It? Real Costs, the $50 vs $97 Plan, and When Pay-Per-Use Wins

HighLevel sells its AI Employee as a $50 or $97 monthly add-on, but for many accounts plain pay-per-use is cheaper. Here is what each plan includes, the per-minute math, and how to decide in 30 days.

Is the GoHighLevel AI Employee worth it?

The plan card says $97 a month. Then you switch on Voice AI for a client, the agency wallet starts dropping, and three weeks later you are trying to work out whether the $97 Unlimited add-on would have been cheaper than paying by the minute. Most people never do the math. They pick a plan and hope.

This guide does the math. It covers what HighLevel's AI Employee plans include as of October 2026, what voice and chat cost on pay-per-use, where each plan breaks even, and when you should not use HighLevel's AI at all. HighLevel has not been tested by this site. Everything here comes from HighLevel's own pricing pages and help articles, plus builds documented on this site.

What you actually get

HighLevel's base plans are $97 a month for Starter, $297 for Unlimited and $497 for Agency Pro. The AI Employee is an add-on on top, priced per sub-account (HighLevel calls it per enabled location).

AI Employee Growth is $50 a month. It includes 1,000 Conversation AI agent responses a month, 100 Voice AI minutes covering inbound, outbound and website widget calls combined, plus Reviews AI and Content AI. Once you use the allowance, extra usage bills at pay-per-use rates.

AI Employee Unlimited is $97 a month. Conversation AI, Voice AI, Reviews AI and Content AI are all unlimited, and you get three times the Growth allowance for Ask AI and AI Studio. Unlimited has limits in practice. HighLevel's help article says unlimited usage is subject to its terms of service, including excessive-use restrictions, and that it may throttle, limit or cut off access. Normal business use is fine. Running a call center through one sub-account is not.

Neither plan covers everything. Agent Studio, HighLevel's flow builder for custom agents, is pay-per-use on every plan. Phone charges, meaning numbers, call minutes and text messages, are billed separately whatever you choose. HighLevel says its phone system is priced the same as Twilio, and it adds a 5 percent markup on pass-through phone charges.

What a minute and a message cost on pay-per-use

If no AI Employee plan is active, or you have used up the Growth allowance, Voice AI bills by the minute in parts. As of October 2026, the voice engine is $0.045 a minute. Standard text-to-speech from OpenAI or Cartesia adds $0.015, for a base of $0.06 a minute. ElevenLabs voices cost more: $0.035 a minute for V2.5 and $0.17 for V3, so a premium ElevenLabs voice nearly quadruples the base rate. Speech-to-speech models are priced as a single rate: $0.10 a minute for Gemini 3.1 Flash Live and $0.20 for GPT Realtime. On top of all of these, you pay for the language model's tokens and for the phone call itself.

Conversation AI on pay-per-use is billed by tokens. HighLevel's example is GPT-5 at $1.25 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. A typical text reply that reads a few thousand tokens of prompt and history and writes a couple of hundred works out to well under a cent. That is our estimate, not a HighLevel figure; it depends on your prompt length and model.

The break-even math

Voice is where the plans really differ. At the base rate of $0.06 a minute, before tokens:

At 100 minutes a month, pay-per-use costs about $6, Growth $50, Unlimited $97. At 500 minutes, pay-per-use is about $30, Growth is $50 plus 400 overage minutes, so $74, and Unlimited is $97. At 900 minutes, pay-per-use is about $54, Growth about $98, Unlimited $97. Pay-per-use only passes Unlimited at roughly 1,600 minutes a month on engine and voice alone, and the token cost pulls that crossover lower.

Two things follow. First, if you only care about voice, Growth rarely makes sense. Its 100 included minutes are worth about $6 at base rates, so you are paying $50 mostly for the Conversation AI responses and Reviews AI. Second, for voice-only use the real choice is pay-per-use versus Unlimited, and it turns on your volume and voice choice. Pick an ElevenLabs V3 voice at $0.215 a minute and Unlimited pays for itself at about 450 minutes.

For text, the math leans the other way. If a reply costs well under a cent in tokens, 1,000 replies a month costs a few dollars on pay-per-use, so the $50 Growth plan is only worth it if you also use Reviews AI and Content AI heavily or want a predictable bill.

Predictability matters more than it sounds. If you are an agency reselling AI to clients at a flat monthly price, Unlimited turns a variable cost you cannot forecast into a fixed one. That alone justifies it for many agencies, even at volumes where pay-per-use is a little cheaper.

Monthly Voice AI cost by plan (engine + standard voice only) Voice minutes a month Pay-per-use Growth ($50) Unlimited ($97) 100 $6 $50 $97 500 $30 $74 $97 900 $54 $98 $97 2,000 $120 $164 $97 At $0.06 a minute ($0.045 engine + $0.015 voice). Pay-per-use and Growth overage also add LLM tokens, so their real totals run higher. Phone charges apply on every plan. From HighLevel's AI product pricing article, October 2026.

A worked example: a three-truck plumbing company

Take a plumbing company already running its CRM, calendar and texting on HighLevel Starter at $97 a month. It wants Voice AI to answer after-hours and overflow calls and Conversation AI to reply to web chat and texts. These are illustrative numbers.

Call volume: 300 calls a month reach the agent, averaging three minutes, so 900 minutes. Chat and text: about 600 AI replies a month.

On pay-per-use: 900 minutes at $0.06 is $54, plus tokens for the calls and the 600 replies. Call it $65 to $80 a month in AI usage, depending on the model and prompt length. On Growth: $50, plus 800 overage minutes at $0.06, which is $48, plus voice tokens, so roughly $105 to $115. On Unlimited: $97 flat.

On top of any of these, the company pays its phone charges: the number, inbound call minutes at roughly Twilio's rate of about a penny a minute plus HighLevel's 5 percent, and its text messages. Total monthly bill on pay-per-use comes to about $175 to $200 with the $97 Starter plan. On Unlimited, about $205 to $215.

The answer for this plumber: start on pay-per-use, watch the bill for a month, and switch to Unlimited if minutes climb past 1,200 or so or if the owner wants a fixed number. Growth is the worst choice of the three for this mix.

For comparison, a standalone build on Retell runs about $0.125 a minute including telephony at its default example rate, so 900 minutes is about $113, but you then need something to connect it to your CRM and calendar. If you are already on HighLevel, the native agent avoids that work.

What builds on this site do with it

HighLevel is the most common platform among the home service and agency builds documented here. A real estate AI receptionist built inside HighLevel routes buyers, sellers, renters and property management callers through separate flows, and the builder reports a client who was missing about half of daily inbound calls now captures all of them (builtwithagents.ai/strategy/ai-voice-receptionist-real-estate-gohighlevel-architecture).

A dental SMS agent on HighLevel qualifies new patient leads and books them, with the builder projecting under $10 a month in running costs. That is a projection, not a measured result (builtwithagents.ai/strategy/dental-ai-sales-agent-sms-gohighlevel). At the agency end, one operator reports selling AI receptionists on HighLevel to franchise networks at $499 a location, 300 locations in a single month. That figure is self-reported (builtwithagents.ai/strategy/franchise-ai-receptionists-300-locations-499-month).

The pattern: the AI Employee earns its keep when HighLevel is already the system of record. The agent books into the same calendar, writes to the same contact and triggers the same workflows, so there is no sync to break.

When to skip it

Skip it if you are not already on HighLevel. Adopting a whole CRM to get a phone bot is the wrong order of operations; a standalone AI receptionist or a Retell or Vapi build connected to your existing tools will cost less and fit better. Skip it if you need deep custom call logic, such as looking up live inventory or job status in another system mid-call. You can do it through Agent Studio and webhooks, but at that point a dedicated voice platform gives you more control. And if you handle patient health information, confirm in writing what HighLevel will sign and support before any patient call touches it.

How to decide in 30 days

Step 1: Pull last month's volume

In the sub-account, count last month's inbound calls that went unanswered or came in after hours, and the number of inbound texts and chats. Multiply calls by an average of three minutes if you do not have real durations. That gives you a minutes estimate and a replies estimate.

Step 2: Run one sub-account on pay-per-use for a month

Leave the AI Employee plan off for one sub-account and turn on Voice AI and Conversation AI. Use the standard OpenAI or Cartesia voice, not ElevenLabs, so you measure the base rate. Set the agent to answer overflow and after-hours calls only.

Step 3: Set guardrails before the first call

Give the Conversation AI bot a single goal, usually booking an appointment on one calendar. Add handoff rules: anger, billing disputes, anything about a past job, and any request for a person. Limit its working hours to when you are not staffed, and give the voice agent a transfer number for emergencies.

Step 4: Read the usage after 30 days

Check the billing and wallet transactions for the sub-account. Note voice minutes, total Voice AI charges, Conversation AI charges and phone charges separately. Divide total Voice AI charges by minutes to get your real per-minute rate including tokens.

Step 5: Pick the plan from your own numbers

If AI usage charges are well under $97 and steady, stay on pay-per-use. If they are close to or above $97, or swing a lot month to month, move to Unlimited. Choose Growth only if you use a lot of Conversation AI, Reviews AI and Content AI and very little voice.

Step 6: Decide on the voice last

Only after the agent works, test whether a premium ElevenLabs voice changes how callers respond. If it does not change bookings, keep the standard voice. On pay-per-use, the V3 voice costs more than three times as much a minute.

What it costs

As of October 2026: HighLevel base plans at $97, $297 and $497 a month. AI Employee Growth at $50 a month per sub-account, with 1,000 Conversation AI responses and 100 Voice AI minutes. AI Employee Unlimited at $97 a month per sub-account, subject to fair use. Pay-per-use Voice AI from $0.06 a minute with a standard voice, $0.08 with ElevenLabs V2.5 and $0.215 with ElevenLabs V3, plus tokens. Conversation AI billed by tokens. Phone charges on every plan at Twilio-equivalent rates plus a 5 percent markup. Rebilling phone usage to clients without markup needs the $297 or $497 plan, and with markup needs the $497 plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the GoHighLevel AI Employee cost?▾

As of October 2026, AI Employee Growth is $50 a month per sub-account and AI Employee Unlimited is $97 a month per sub-account, on top of a HighLevel plan starting at $97 a month. Without a plan, AI usage bills pay-per-use, with Voice AI from $0.06 a minute plus tokens.

What is the difference between the AI Employee Growth and Unlimited plans?▾

Growth includes 1,000 Conversation AI responses and 100 Voice AI minutes a month, with overages at pay-per-use rates. Unlimited removes those caps for Conversation AI, Voice AI, Reviews AI and Content AI, subject to HighLevel's fair-use terms, and triples the Ask AI and AI Studio allowance.

Does AI Employee Unlimited include phone and text charges?▾

No. HighLevel says phone system charges apply to every call regardless of plan, and texts are billed separately. Agent Studio is also pay-per-use on every plan.

Is pay-per-use cheaper than the AI Employee plans?▾

Often, at low and moderate volume. At $0.06 a minute before tokens, 900 voice minutes costs about $54 on pay-per-use versus $97 on Unlimited. Pay-per-use catches up with Unlimited somewhere below about 1,600 minutes a month once tokens are included, and much sooner with a premium ElevenLabs voice.

Can agencies resell the GoHighLevel AI Employee?▾

Yes. Agencies commonly rebill AI and phone usage to client sub-accounts. HighLevel's pricing guide says rebilling phone usage without markup is available on the $297 and $497 plans, and rebilling with markup only on the $497 plan.

Is GoHighLevel Voice AI as good as Retell or Vapi?▾

It is less flexible but much simpler if HighLevel is already your CRM, because booking, contacts and workflows are built in. If you need custom mid-call lookups into other systems or very fine control of the voice pipeline, a dedicated platform like Retell or Vapi gives you more room.
