SafeBase vs Vanta
SafeBase vs Vanta is a slightly lopsided comparison, and it helps to know why before you book demos. SafeBase started as a trust center and security questionnaire tool. Vanta started as compliance automation for SOC 2, ISO 27001 and similar frameworks, then added a trust center and questionnaire automation on top. They overlap on the two things sales teams care about most, trust centers and questionnaires, but only Vanta runs your compliance program.
The other thing to know is that SafeBase is no longer an independent company. Drata announced it was acquiring SafeBase for about $250 million in February 2025, and in March 2026 Drata said the SafeBase brand would be unified into Drata. The products still exist, now sold as Drata's Trust Center and AI Questionnaire Assistance, and safebase.io now redirects to drata.com. So the real decision is often Drata plus SafeBase versus Vanta.

What The Table Is Really Telling You
On owner, SafeBase leans toward Drata (acquisition announced February 2025; brand unified into Drata in March 2026), while Vanta leans toward Vanta (independent).
On trust center, SafeBase leans toward Core product: gated document access, rules-based permissions, NDA workflows, while Vanta leans toward Included module; Advanced Trust Center on higher tiers.
On questionnaire ai, SafeBase leans toward AI Questionnaire Assistance drafts answers from your knowledge base, controls and past responses, while Vanta leans toward Vanta AI Agent drafts answers, routes questions to owners and exports to the original format.
SafeBase for AI Workflows
SafeBase's strength is the buyer-facing side of security. Its trust center lets prospects request and read your SOC 2 report, policies and security documentation behind access rules and NDAs, which reduces the number of questionnaires that arrive at all. When a questionnaire does arrive, AI Questionnaire Assistance drafts answers from your knowledge base, controls, policies and past responses, and a person approves, edits or rejects each one. Drata says you can pull revenue data in to prioritize reviews by deal status, so the six-figure deal gets answered before the small one.
The SafeBase Chrome extension is a real advantage for teams that live in customer portals. Drata's release notes describe it extracting questions directly from page HTML so it can work on third-party risk portals without a custom integration, suggesting answers in a side panel, and autofilling on supported portals. On unsupported portals you still copy and paste.
The catch is that SafeBase is now part of Drata. Drata says existing features, contracts, pricing and URLs are unchanged, but the long-term roadmap belongs to Drata, and the deepest integration will be with Drata's compliance platform. If you run compliance on Vanta or another tool, you are buying a trust center from a competitor of your compliance vendor.
Vanta for AI Workflows
Vanta is the better pick when the underlying job is compliance. It connects to your cloud, identity and HR systems to monitor controls for SOC 2, ISO 27001 and other frameworks, and its trust center and questionnaire automation sit on top of that same evidence. That means answers to security questions can reference controls you are already monitoring, rather than a separate library someone has to keep current.
Vanta's AI Agent takes the first pass at each questionnaire, delegates questions to subject matter experts, and exports answers back into spreadsheets, Word documents, PDFs or portals. Vanta claims its AI answers 80 percent or more of security questions automatically and that answers are accepted up to 95 percent of the time. Those are Vanta's numbers, so test on a questionnaire you have already answered.
Watch the questionnaire caps. Vanta's pricing page lists 25 questionnaires per year on Plus and 144 on Professional, while its questionnaire product page lists 144 for standard and 288 for advanced. Pricing is quote-based. Vendr's purchase data puts the median Vanta contract at about $20,000 per year, with a range from $7,500 to roughly $57,000, and estimates that questionnaire automation and Trust Center modules each add $3,000 to $8,000 a year.
Our Verdict
Choose SafeBase (through Drata) if you already use Drata for compliance, or if your biggest problem is sales-facing security reviews and you want the most mature trust center plus a strong portal extension.
Choose Vanta if you need compliance automation and want trust center and questionnaire features in the same platform, or if you already run SOC 2 on Vanta. Bolting SafeBase onto a Vanta stack rarely makes sense now that both offer trust centers and questionnaire AI.
If you use neither and questionnaires are the only problem, compare both against a standalone AI agent such as Conveyor before you commit. Our guide to the best AI agent for security questionnaires covers those options.
FAQ
Is SafeBase owned by Drata?
Yes. Drata announced its acquisition of SafeBase in February 2025 for about $250 million. In March 2026 Drata unified the SafeBase brand into Drata, and SafeBase's Trust Center and AI Questionnaire Assistance are now sold as Drata products.
Is SafeBase better than Vanta?
SafeBase is stronger as a dedicated trust center and questionnaire tool. Vanta is stronger overall because it also automates compliance. For most companies the better choice is whichever matches the compliance platform they already use.
Does Vanta have a trust center like SafeBase?
Yes. Vanta includes a Trust Center on its Essentials plan and lists an Advanced Trust Center on Professional. SafeBase's trust center has been its core product for longer and is more focused on sales workflows.
Which has better security questionnaire automation?
Both use AI to draft answers from your existing documentation and route them for review. SafeBase's Chrome extension is more mature for portals, while Vanta's answers draw directly on the controls it monitors. Test both on a real questionnaire before deciding.
How much do SafeBase and Vanta cost?
Neither publishes prices. Vendr reports a median Vanta contract of about $20,000 per year, with questionnaire and Trust Center modules each estimated at $3,000 to $8,000 a year. SafeBase pricing now comes through Drata sales and is quote-based.
Can I use SafeBase with Vanta?
You can, but it means running a trust center from Drata alongside a Vanta compliance program, with two answer libraries to maintain. Since Vanta now has its own trust center and questionnaire AI, most Vanta customers are better served by staying in one platform.
Do SafeBase and Vanta have browser extensions?
Yes. The SafeBase Chrome extension parses questions from portal pages and autofills answers on supported portals. Vanta's Questionnaire Automation extension does similar work but is still labelled beta, and some field types must be filled by hand.
Should a startup pick SafeBase or Vanta?
A startup that still needs SOC 2 should usually start with a compliance platform such as Vanta or Drata, then use the trust center and questionnaire features that come with it. SafeBase on its own does not get you compliant.
